Abstract

Abstract

Objective of the study is to determine the motivational and value potential of the discipline ‘Physical Culture’ on the basis of a survey of Russian and Kazakh students.

Methods and structure of the study. A survey of students of the universities of Russia and Kazakhstan (N=588) was conducted concerning the compulsory discipline «Physical Culture», including ‘Elective Courses in Physical Culture.’

Results and conclusions. A persistent dissonance was revealed between the institutional requirement (‘to obtain the credit’) and the personal goals of the students (‘health’, ‘tone’, ‘communication’): 61.8 % of the respondents consider the discipline non-compulsory and 44.3 % assess the standards as ‘a completely useless exercise,’ while 97 % of absences are documented ‘on grounds of illness.’ A content analysis of the open answers identified the key barriers: an inconvenient timetable and the personality of the teacher. Drawing on a three-stage model of the formation of a value attitude towards physical culture (‘I want’ → ‘I must’ → ‘I can’), it is shown that the majority of students (54 %) become stuck at the initial stage without achieving self-actualisation. A comparative analysis of Russia and Kazakhstan revealed no significant differences, which makes it possible to speak of the systemic character of the problem in the post-Soviet educational space. The question is raised of the need to revise the compulsory status of the discipline or to transform it radically.
